People have called Fred Fletcher a lot of things. The
North Carolina Association of Broadcasters called him a member of the
NCAB Hall
of Fame. The News and Observer called him "Tarheel of the Week".
The Jaycees called him Man of the Year. The National Recreation and Park
Association called him "an outstanding leader in advancing the recreation,
park and conservation movement" when they presented him with the Robert
M. Artz award. Thousands of eastern North Carolinians called him the "Fairy
Tale Man". Fred Fletcher was a warm, caring man with a keen sense
of humor that was endearing to all who knew him. His mission in life seemed
to be making people happy even at his own expense. Fred Fletcher was a
former president of Capitol Broadcasting Company. In the 1940's and 50's
he had various shows on WRAL Radio and WRAL-TV including the highly popular "Tempus
Fugit" (Time Flies). Fred gave of his time and talents to many community
organizations. He served on the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Board for
50 years. Fred Fletcher Park off Glenwood Avenue honors his many years
of dedication to a "greener" Raleigh. Fred lost his battle
with cancer in January 2000 at 89 years young. His spirited zest for
life inspires
us to fight on against this dreaded disease.
